Essential deck repair work starting from the middle of this month, will limit night time access across the Kawarau Falls Bridge on State Highway 6 between Frankton and Kelvin Heights for about six weeks.
The Transport Agency says the partial closures from the 16th of March through to the 30th of April, will operate from Sunday night to Friday mornings, between 11pm and 6am.There will be 10 minute periods on the hour between these times where motorists can cross the Bridge.
Senior Network Manager Otago John Jarvis says the partial closure is unavoidable because the bridge is single lane. However, access will be maintained for emergency services at all times and the pedestrian footbridge will also remain open.
“The repairs are part of an ongoing maintenance programme on the bridge and will involve the part replacement of the bridge running boards and decking. This work will result in a smoother ride for bridge users and less rattle and clatter from the decking”.
Mr Jarvis says our contractors is working overnight and isn’t working on Friday and Saturday nights, to minimise disruptions for bridge users while this important job is carried out.
