Work to repair a retaining wall and replace guardrail at Maia on State highway 88 between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, will see the highway in this area reduced to one lane for up to a week from Monday, 22 September.
The retaining wall damaged in a vehicle crash at the end of last year, is about 300 metres north of the Jessie Street intersection. A single traffic lane will operate between 9am and 4pm on weekdays while the repair work is carried out with two traffic lanes available outside of these times.
Transport Agency Journey Manager Graeme Hall says the job is being done now ahead of the new cruise ship season starting early next month. Provided there aren’t any major weather disruptions, everything should be completed by Monday, 29 September.
“The repairs were put off until now to avoid disrupting the cruise ship season that finished in April and colder winter weather that’s unsuitable for carrying out this type of work. This job is also reasonably challenging, as it involves working around underground services including fibre optic cable that run below the work site.”
A traffic management plan will be in place to minimise any disruptions for road users.
Mr Hall says reducing the highway to one lane is essential for plant and equipment to access the site to carry out the work. While we aren’t expecting any significant delays for road users, they should still allow a few extra minutes travel time when using this route between 9am and 4pm next week, and the Monday of the following week.
The cost of the repair work is about $30,000.
