Overnight work is planned on temporary SH5 bypass between Te Pohue and Glengarry

State Highway 5 Napier – Taupō Road will close for six hours overnight next Wednesday (24 May) for urgent work to the bypass constructed between Te Pohue and Glengarry.

Following Cyclone Gabrielle, a slip between Te Pohue and Glengarry made the road impassable until a temporary bypass was constructed.

The temporary bypass now needs some urgent work to ensure the road surface remains resilient and fit for use over the next few months until the adjoining long-term solution is complete.

The road will close at 9pm on Wednesday (24 May) and reopen at 3am the following morning (Thursday 25 May). The closure points will be the gates near Hedgeley Road in Eskdale and near Caroline Drive just south of Taupō; there will also be a closure point at Glengarry Road.

Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne Journey Manager Andre Taylor says Waka Kotahi understands any closures of this nature are frustrating for people, however, by doing this essential work at night, we are hoping disruption will be minimised.

“People using this stretch of road have been understanding over the past couple of months and we want to thank people in advance for their continued patience during next week’s closure.”

Contractors are making good progress on a permanent fix, reinstating the land before the new stretch of road is constructed.
