The NZ Transport Agency will close the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) overnight on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 April to lift beams into place on the new Rimu Road overbridge.
Motorway lanes in both directions will be closed each night from 8pm until 5am the following morning, from the Rimu Road overbridge to the Walmsley Road overbridge.
The project team will also take advantage of this time to install motorway signs on the new Hastie Avenue footbridge and replace beams on the Walmsley Road off-ramp.
“We have scheduled the work to coincide with the school holidays to minimise disruption to motorists. Traffic volumes are much lower over this period and the detour routes in place have been well tested during past closures” says Wayne McDonald, NZTA’s Regional Director for Auckland and Northland.
Delays are possible so motorists travelling to and from Auckland International Airport are advised to allow an extra 30 minutes for their journey. Advance warning signs will be in place to give early notice of the closure and motorists should follow the signposted detour routes. These are via the Mahunga Drive off-ramp for southbound traffic and via the Coronation Road off-ramp for northbound traffic.
The Rimu Road overbridge replacement is due to be completed in late June 2009 and will restore the eastward connection between Mangere Bridge Village and Mahunga Drive. The new overbridge will feature dedicated cycle lanes in both directions, a widened footpath for pedestrians and barriers to improve safety.
