Gladstone Road Bridge will be reduced to one lane with stop/go controllers on Thursday 1 November. The historic bridge is currently being widened to create a shared walking and cycling path, as part of Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme, aimed at getting more locals on their bikes.
Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield says people can expect delays on the bridge and some traffic tail-backs in the surrounding area, as experienced with the last lane closure.
“We are asking for patience as we deliver this really neat project for the region,” says Mr Hadfield.
The contractors will need to close one lane approximately six more times between now and the end of the project in order to safely complete construction.
“We have been working with stakeholders to ensure disruption is as minimal as possible, and ask motorists to respect the 30 kilometre per hour speed limit in place at the construction site.”
“There are a number of people ignoring the speed reduction, which puts the safety of workers on site at risk. We want to remind motorists that these workers are real people who want to get home safe to their families and whānau. Sometimes it might seem like no one is on site, but workers are often hidden behind the orange fencing or on scaffolding on the side of the bridge,” says Mr Hadfield.
Tairāwhiti Roads is currently investigating methods to help increase compliance with the speed restriction.
The project is scheduled for completion in March 2019.
