The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) will be undertaking minor improvements between Ngauranga and Aotea Quay to improve traffic flow particularly during peak times.
State Highways Manager Wellington Rod James said the works will begin on Monday 1 August and changes to the layout of the route will be introduced progressively from that date.
“The Ngauranga to Aotea Quay project aims to keep traffic moving on this very busy section of State Highway 1 and reduce the frustrating stop-start instances experienced during peak times. We ask drivers to take extra care while familiarising themselves with the new layout.”
Mr James said that weather permitting, the works should be complete by Wednesday 24 August but throughout this period there will be partial lane closures between 7.30pm and 6.00am.
“A change to the northbound Wellington to Johnsonville/Petone section of the route will see an additional lane provided just before the State Highway 1/2 split. This will allow two lanes of traffic to enter both State Highway 1 and 2.
“The change to the southbound Johnsonville/Petone to Wellington section of the route will see the merge between State Highway 1 and 2 shortened. To better facilitate the flow of traffic, drivers will need to merge more quickly here,” he said.
The Ngauranga to Aotea Quay project is part of the Wellington Northern Corridor which runs from Levin to Wellington Airport.
The Wellington Northern Corridor, in turn, is one of seven ‘roads of national significance’ that the Government has identified as essential state highways to reduce congestion, improve safety and support economic growth in New Zealand.
