All lanes on the Newmarket Viaduct on Auckland’s Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) have re-opened but the NZ Transport Agency’s says congestion on the motorway is still heavy and drivers face delays.
Two lanes in both directions were closed after a light truck and trailer rolled on the viaduct northbound around 2pm. Queues of traffic extended several kilometres in both directions after the crash.
The NZTA says it takes time for queues to clear - particularly at a location like Newmarket which is one of the busiest sections of the Auckland motorway network. Other sections of the network may be affected as traffic builds up during the afternoon peak.
The NZTA thanks drivers for their patience while the crashed vehicle and trailer were removed and the motorway at Newmarket cleared for safe use again.
