The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is planning the next stage of improvements to State Highway 1 (SH1) in Whangarei after the successful completion of the upgrade at the intersection of Central Avenue/SH1 (Western Hills Drive).
The NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Northland, Tommy Parker, says the next stage will focus on the intersection of SH1/ SH14 / Maunu Road.
“With the onset of winter, the project team is finalising the programme and exact timings are not yet confirmed. However some enabling work has already taken place, including the removal of a number of properties, and the upgrade of the traffic signals at the intersection,” Mr Parker says.
Mr Parker thanks the community for their support and patience after the completion of the Central Avenue/SH1 works.
“It’s never easy working in the middle of a busy city like Whangarei, and the support we’ve had has played a big part in the positive outcome of that project. Continued support will be crucial to the success of our other projects,” says Mr Parker.
From mid-June a temporary layout will be in place at the intersection of SH1/SH14/Maunu Road to minimise disruption and keep the traffic moving. The NZTA’s project also includes safer facilities for walkers and cyclists, and widening the highway with an extra lane in each direction. These improvements will support economic growth in and around Whangarei by making it easier for people to travel.
To find out more about the projects the NZ Transport Agency and Whangarei District Council have planned, an open day will be held on Thursday 30 May at the St Johns Hall, 43 Western Hills Drive, between the hours of 9:30am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 7:00pm.
