NZTA improvements impact on key highway link to Auckland airport

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists there will be several overnight closures on George Bolt Drive (State Highway 20A) starting this Sunday, 31 July that will have an impact on travel to and from Auckland International Airport.

George Bolt Drive is the main highway link connecting the airport with the Southwestern Motorway and Auckland’s CBD.

The closures for necessary re-surfacing work will occur on four consecutive nights between 9pm and 5am, and detours will be in place to help people driving to and from the airport.

“The detours could add up to 10 minutes to journeys, and people should factor the extra time into their travel so that they reach their destinations safely,” says the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker.  “We are doing this work at night when traffic volumes are light to minimise any disruption to people.”

The timetable of closures is:-

Sunday/Monday, 31 July and 1 August:

George Bolt Drive closed city bound between New Ihumatoa Road and Montgomerie Road.  Detour: New Ihumatao Rd, Airpark Drive, Montgomerie Rd, and back onto George Bolt Drive.

Monday, 1 August:

George Bolt Drive closed airport bound from the Southwestern Motorway to Bader Drive.  Detour:  continue on Southwestern Motorway to Massey Road off-ramp, re-enter Southwestern Motorway at Massey Road on-ramp northbound and leave motorway again at George Bolt Drive airport exit.

Tuesday/Wednesday, 2 and 3 August:

George Bolt Drive closed airport bound between Montgomerie Rd and New Ihumatao Road.  Detour: along Montgomerie Rd, Airpark Drive, New Ihumatao, and back onto George Bolt Drive.

All the night time closures are weather dependent.  If bad weather prevents work on one night, it will be deferred until the next suitable evening.

“We regret these disruptions, but this work is an important part of our maintenance programme to ensure this busy and important section of the city’s state highway network is kept in a good and safe condition for all road users,” Mr Parker says.
