The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers that there will be significant disruption on the Papakura interchange on Auckland's Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) because of necessary works linked to the upgrade of the interchange.
From Wednesday, 1 August, there will be a new road layout on the Hingaia Road overbridge. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between the intersections of Hingaia Road and Harbourside Drive and the southbound Papakura off-ramp. The changes will remain in place for up to six weeks to allow the NZTA's contractors to complete a new northbound on-ramp from Hingaia Road.
The NZTA's acting State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton, apologies for the disruption but says the work is necessary so that drivers can benefit from the improvements to the interchange.
"There will be reduced access on the overbridge, and people should allow more time for their journeys," Mr Mutton says. ""It is important for all drivers to reduce their speed through the project area for the safety of themselves and their passengers, and also for our workers on site"
Mr Mutton says the six week-long timetable for the work is dependent on the weather.
The NZTA plans to open its new northbound motorway link from Hingaia Road in October, before construction starts on changes to the southbound off-ramp at Papakura.
The $35M Papakura Interchange upgrade project includes improvements to existing on/off-ramps and a duplicate three lane bridge over the motorway, with safer access for walking and cycling.
