The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed it will reopen State Highway 1 between Seddon and south of Ward at approximately midday after a strong effort from road repair crews.
Marlborough Roads Manager Frank Porter says contractors have put in a heroic effort to restore the highway after yesterday's earthquake opened up several large longitudinal cracks in the road.
"We want to sincerely thank the public for being so patient. When the main highway is closed it's always a big disruption, and people have been really understanding. Our hats go off to the road crews for getting the job done so quickly to enable this lifeline to reopen."
Mr Porter says once the road is reopened there is likely to be further roadworks to patch up the highway, and delays are likely throughout the day.
People setting out on their journeys are urged to first check the NZTA’s website, which is regularly updated with information about most delays, closures and detours at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic(external link).
