Lower North Island storm update - 4pm, Monday 8 December

|

Following heavy rainfall in the early hours of this morning several areas of the Wellington transport network were affected with surface flooding and slips.

NZ Transport Agency systems manager Mark Owen says crews have been working hard all day in challenging conditions, clearing and repairing affected areas, with the state highway network  in the region now open, with the exception of SH 58.

State Highway 58 remains closed, between Pauatahanui Roundabout in Whitby through to SH 2 (Haywards).

Mr Owen says with another band of heavy rain forecast later this afternoon/evening, there is a risk of more disruptions to an already saturated network.

"As soon as the rain clears, crews will be working hard overnight to reinstate SH 58, however if the weather impedes the repairs, there is a risk that there may be restricted access a temporary roadworks site tomorrow morning. We'll know what restrictions, if any, will be in place by the early hours of Monday morning.

"While the highway network has withstood the weather onslaught and bounced back quickly, we want to remind road users that further slips could occur,  as the ground dries out, potentially causing further damage and travel delays.

The Transport Agency is advising people to factor in extra time for their travel, especially later this afternoon and during Monday morning's peak traffic. We also ask people to be mindful of the safety of workers who are continuing to repair affected sections of road, and to comply with any temporary speed restrictions and the instructions of road crews.

A further update will be provided on Monday morning.
