The NZ Transport Agency has expanded its traffic information service for drivers by increasing the number of webcams on Auckland's Southern Motorway to give people more detailed information about highway conditions before they travel.

The six new cameras are positioned at the following locations: Takanini, Walter Strevens Drive, Pahurehure, Rushgreen Avenue, Park Estate, and Slippery Creek. The cameras all have south facing views. Their images, which are refreshed every 60 seconds, can be viewed on the NZTA’s Auckland traffic website, http://www.trafficnz.info/googlemaps/#cameras(external link), and for all developers on the NZTA’s InfoConnect website, https://infoconnect.highwaysinfo.govt.nz(external link)
The six additional cameras bring to 23 the number operating on the Southern Motorway.
“The extra cameras will allow people to make their own decisions about when they should travel with more accuracy,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland, Tommy Parker.
“Every picture speaks a thousand words might be an old saying, but it is an effective one as far as webcams are concerned because they give people the opportunity to avoid congestion, and to have smoother and safer journeys,” Mr Parker added.
Webcams also operate in Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch, and the NZTA plans to expand it service for travellers in the South Island and the central North Island.
