NZ Transport Agency announces key health and safety appointment

The NZ Transport Agency has appointed Greg Lazzaro to lead the Safety, Health & Environment group for the organisation, with responsibility for workplace health and safety, road safety and the Agency’s environmental response.

Mr Lazzaro has extensive experience in Health, Safety and Environment, having held a number of Senior Executive positions. He joins the Transport Agency from Fonterra where he was Global Health and Safety Resilience and Risk Director. He has previously held positions at Sodexo, UGL, Welvic and Australian Vinyls – all in Australia.

NZ Transport Agency Chairman Michael Stiassny says the appointment of Mr Lazzaro will help the Agency to achieve its ambition of leading best practice in the area of workplace health and safety.

“Ensuring the health and safety of our people and of the thousands of contractors who work on our projects is a critical priority for the Transport Agency. The Board is determined that the Transport Agency will lead best practice in this area, and Greg’s skills, experience and capability will help to make that a reality.”

Mr Stiassny says Mr Lazarro will also oversee the NZ Transport Agency’s work in the area of road safety.

“The number of deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand’s roads is simply unacceptable, and we will be working closely with Police and our other road safety partners to help to turn that around. No-one should be killed or seriously injured as the price of using our transport system.

“We are sharpening our focus in all aspects of health safety and I am delighted that we’ll be doing this with the added skills and capability that Mr Lazzaro will bring to the Transport Agency.”

Mr Lazzaro will start at the Transport Agency in early April.
