Northwestern Motorway to close for demolition of bridges

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises that State Highway 16 between Lincoln Road and Westgate will be closed to traffic overnight over the next three weekends. The closures will allow demolition of old bridge structures that cross the motorway at Royal Road and Huruhuru Road.

The bridge replacements are part of a wider project to provide additional vehicle and bus lanes on the Northwestern Motorway and extend the cycleway from Lincoln Road to Westgate Bridge.

SH16 will be closed in both directions between Lincoln Road and the Brigham Creek Roundabout from 8pm on Saturday, January 13 to 8am Sunday morning and from 8pm Sunday, January 14 to 5am Monday morning, weather permitting. Detour routes will be in place and clearly signposted.

The motorway will be closed during the same hours on the next two weekends, January 20-21 and January 27-28.

“Closing the motorway during demolition ensures the safety of road users. Doing the work at night when traffic flows are light causes the least disruption,” says the Transport Agency’s Senior Manager Project Delivery, Chris Hunt.

“A full closure is the quickest way to complete the work and minimises the disturbance to people living nearby. There will be increased noise and vibration. The Transport Agency thanks local residents for their continued patience and understanding during the motorway upgrade,” says Mr Hunt.

While the motorway is closed, the Royal Road and Huruhuru Bridges will remain open.

“Traffic will use the new bridge lanes built alongside the old structures that are being taken down. But there will be no pedestrian access,” says Mr Hunt.
