A month of roadworks with a 24/7 detour is coming up for people who travel north on SH1 towards Dunedin – from Tuesday, 7 February to early March.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Coastal Otago highway maintenance team will be reconstructing half the road width and fitting cycle-friendly covers to two mud tanks, connected to stormwater, at East Taieri.
The other side of the highway was reconstructed two years ago, says Chris Harris, Senior Network Manager for Waka Kotahi.
“While southbound drivers will remain on SH1, there will be temporary speed restrictions past the site so people will need to build in extra time for their trips to the airport, for example,” he says.
The work will run from 6am each weekday to 8 pm and is weather dependent, however the traffic management will be in place 24/7 throughout. Cement needs to cure for some of the work which will also add to the time required.
“We ask everyone who supports and uses businesses along this route to make an extra effort to do so throughout this work,” says Mr Harris.
Northbound traffic will be detoured off SH1 onto Gladfield Road, Gladstone Road South, right onto SH87, Quarry Road and the Mosgiel on-ramp and then north on SH1. This route is suitable for all vehicles including HPMV.
Footpaths will continue to be open but pedestrians need to stay on the footpath and avoid the construction area.
