New traffic lights on the SH75 Halswell/Dunbars Road intersection designed to improve safety and traffic flows will be activated at 10am tomorrow morning
This $1.9 million New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) funded project was initiated because local commuters exiting Dunbars Road to SH75 were experiencing delays during peak travel times. With traffic volumes increasing, these delays were occurring outside peak traffic times as well.
The NZTA Canterbury Highways Operations Manager Peter Connors says with eight crashes recorded at this intersection over the last five years safety was another important factor in the decision to go ahead with this project. Growing traffic congestion on Halswell Road has limited the opportunities for vehicles to cross the main road, increasing the potential for a crash.
“There is a small amount of finishing off work to be carried out around the upgraded intersection and this should be completed in the next week or two. Road users are urged to take care driving through the new intersection layout until they familiarise themselves with it”.
Mr Connors added that with the new lights fully operational motorists should see a noticeable improvement in traffic flows especially during peak traffic periods.
