New section of Waikato Expressway open to traffic

|

Construction of the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway is steaming ahead, with the first completed stretch to be opened to traffic this month, the NZ Transport Agency says.

Updated: 4 September 2014 3.50pm

State Highway 1 (SH1) traffic will be moved onto the first piece of the new expressway, between Duncan Road and Pencarrow Road, from September 11.

The traffic switch will open up a construction area to allow contractors to get started on a new cycleway, earthworks and drainage in the area. The cycleway connection between Strawberry Fields Lane and the Hautapu Road extension is expected to be complete in late 2014.

Hautapu Road access to SH1 will be permanently closed from 4pm on Monday September 8, with  detours in place via Racecourse Road and the recently re-opened Pickering Road.

There will be a left hand turn only for traffic entering or exiting Pencarrow Road with short local detour routes in place for right turning traffic.

Speed restrictions on SH1 will remain 80km/h. Delays are not anticipated however motorists are asked to drive with extra care while they adapt to the changes.

The Transport Agency thanks travellers for their understanding and patience while construction of the expressway continues.
