New pedestrian signals designed to improve safety at the Frome Street/State highway (SH1) area in North Oamaru, should be operating by the end of this month.
The Transport Agency says preparatory work for the underground ducting to carry cabling to the new signals starts on Monday 9 February.
Transport Agency Senior Safety Engineer Roy Johnston, says this work is an upgrade of the current zebra crossing, where there was an issue with near misses and vehicles failing to stop for pedestrians.
“Local businesses and community were consulted on the changes and agreement reached regarding the layout of the signals and the impact on parking.”
Mr Johnston says the signals costing $100,000 should significantly increase pedestrian safety at this site.
