Work commenced last night on the installation of a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Newmarket’s busy thoroughfare. The facility will provide a much needed crossing point midway between the Great South Rd intersection and Westfield’s 277 shopping mall, and is being installed as part of the NZ Transport Agency’s Newmarket Connection: Viaduct Replacement Project.
“The days of one-dimensional infrastructure projects are long gone, as we explore the opportunities they can provide to enhance the local environment,” says Tommy Parker, NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland. “With Newmarket Connection, given that the viaduct straddles a busy retail hub surrounded by numerous schools, we have made a commitment to improve pedestrian flow and safety.”
Other future pedestrian improvements planned for the Newmarket Connection project include a volcanic-themed walkway from Gillies Ave down to Broadway and a replacement of the footbridge over the motorway at Mt Hobson Road.
The new crossing, which is being installed at the junction of Broadway and Clovernook Road, has been welcomed by the local business community.
“We have talked about the need for a signalised pedestrian crossing around this part of Broadway for many years, so we are absolutely delighted that NZTA is installing this public amenity as part of the Newmarket Connection project,” says Cameron Brewer, Chief Executive of the Newmarket Business Association.
“With over 40,000 cars travelling down Broadway every day, not to mention our busy bus lanes, too many people risk their lives on a daily basis crossing that end of Broadway near our only post office. This crossing will not only be great for safety, but good for business and will help urban renewal long term.”
Work will be carried out at night over the next month to ensure minimum inconvenience to the local retail community as the crossing is installed.
