On Saturday 25 July 2009 a new rail safety television advertisement that focuses on the dangers at level crossings goes to air.

Level crossings continue to be a major public health problem for New Zealanders.  Between 1998 and 2008 there were 426 collisions between trains and motor vehicles caused by people not obeying the signals at level crossings.

The advertisement is aimed at all people who drive.  The objective of the campaign is to highlight the potential consequences of choosing not to obey the signals at level crossings.

Many drivers choose not to wait for the barrier arms to lift, or bells to stop, before proceeding onto the tracks.  Sometimes drivers manoeuvre between the barrier arms on either side and put their life and the lives of their passengers at risk.

The objective of this campaign is to show drivers who choose to take risks at level crossings what they could lose if they do not obey the signals.

This television advertisement runs during National Rail Safety Week (24 – 31 July).

The message we want drivers to take out of this advertisement is to think twice before choosing to disregard the signals at level crossings.

The advertisement will be supported by radio and print advertisements.
