Motorists are being advised of delays on State Highway 1 south of the Rakaia township from Monday (12 January) as work gets underway repairing and resurfacing 2.5kms of the highway.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Journey Manager Lee Wright says the work will take about 12 weeks to complete, the highway initially being reduced to a single lane, with a 30km/h speed restriction.
“Temporary traffic lights will control traffic movements through the works site. Motorists are warned this will result in delays of up to five minutes and they should allow extra time for their journeys.”
She says the work is part of the Transport Agency’s summer programme of annual maintenance and safety improvements.
“We know these works will be dusty, noisy and a general nuisance for motorists travelling through the area. However, this work is important from a safety perspective and our contractors will ensure minimal disruption and delays.”
Ms Wright says a number of maintenance and safety improvement works are expected to get underway throughout the region this month and the Transport Agency reminds motorists of the need to slow down and observe speed restrictions through the works sites.
