Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is urging motorists to be patient and kind when passing through worksites, after receiving reports of abuse aimed at roadworkers on State Highway 1 north of Wellington earlier today.
“This behaviour is very disappointing and completely unacceptable under any circumstance,” Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says.
“Our roadworkers are stepping out of their bubbles to do vital work to keep everyone safe on the roads and we should all be grateful to them.”
Waka Kotahi has previously signalled that more worksites would be up and running under Alert Level 3, with strict health and safety measures in place, while it anticipates lower than normal traffic volumes.
“We are working to minimise the impact to travellers, while keeping our worksites safe,” Mr Owen says.
“Again, we urge anyone driving through worksites to be patient, cautious and comply with all temporary speed limits to keep workers safe. Please be careful, be kind and give them a friendly wave.”
