Major road works will get underway on State Highway 3 between Norfolk Road and Rugby Road (Tariki underpass) on Monday, 11 January, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
Taranaki System Manager Ross I’Anson says the existing pavement will be ripped up and the road rebuilt, creating a safer, more resilient highway. This follows drainage works to address the issue of water ponding at the underpass completed last year.
Crews will be onsite between 5.30am and 2.30pm, Monday – Saturday for approximately six weeks, weather permitting.
Work has been scheduled to avoid the highest traffic peaks in the afternoon and evening but there will be delays, particularly during the morning commute.
Stop/Go traffic management will be in place and motorists are advised to plan for delays of up to 30 minutes to their journeys heading north and south.
Mr I’Anson says those travelling between New Plymouth and Hawera in the morning should consider using State Highway 45 to avoid waiting in the queue.
“We understand that this is a busy commuter route and an important link for freight between New Plymouth and Hawera and acknowledge that these works will cause disruption.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we work to improve this important section of highway.”
This work is being undertaken by Downer on behalf of Waka Kotahi as part of its annual maintenance programme.
It is part of a large programme of work being undertaken on SH3 over the construction season, which runs through until the end of March and includes; Inglewood South, Dudley and Durham roads Intersections and Rotokare road intersection.
