A $2 million project to replace Sneiders Bridge and improve state highway 6 (SH6) just south of Okaramio is now underway.
Marlborough Roads* is reconstructing approximately 1km of SH6 to remove four tight curves in the existing road and is replacing Sneiders Bridge. The contract for the project was awarded to local contractors, Fulton Hogan (Marlborough), last month and construction has started on site.
NZTA Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter says that the project is about improving safety for all road users and the local community.
"The improvements will make this section of SH6 straighter, wider and safer for drivers," says Mr Porter.
The project, which will be completed by Easter 2011, includes improvements to the Leslies Road and Camerons Road intersections with seal widening and enhanced lighting. Some power poles will also be removed and the power relocated underground to reduce hazards close to the road.
*Marlborough Roads, as the district's roading office is known, was formally established on 1 December 2000 and is responsible for the management of both NZ Transport Agency-owned state highways in Marlborough and Marlborough District Council-owned roads.
