A change in where Tauranga-bound traffic merges along Hewletts Rd will be put in place from early next week as part of the NZ Transport Agency’s Harbour Link Project.
City-bound traffic will reduce from three to two lanes between the Totara St and Tasman Quay intersections, and then reduce again to a single lane just past the Tasman Quay intersection heading towards Ballance corner. These changes may result in vehicles being queued further back along Hewletts Rd. A temporary speed restriction of 50km/h will be in place through this area.
NZ Transport Agency’s Project Manager Kevin Reid said that the lane changes were needed to allow for construction of the new road and to tie-in with the existing road, which was completed during Stage 1 of the Harbour Link Project in 2007.
“These lane alterations are likely to be in place for up to five months, and initial delays are possible as motorists get used to the new lane configuration. I would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience while this work is being undertaken” he said.
Making the lane changes is weather dependant, and if it is wet the work will be completed on the next suitable day.
