Tairāwhiti Roads has been granted resource consent to design and install metal balustrades on Gladstone Road Bridge, following calls from the community for see-through railings on the bridge to allow a view over the harbour.
Gladstone Road Bridge is currently being widened to create a three metre shared walking and cycling path as part of Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme, and the project originally involved replicating the historic concrete balustrades.
Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield says while the concrete balustrades will still be in place at either end of the bridge, the six spans in the middle will be black metal railings.
“We heard the feedback from the community and sought a resource consent to enable metal railings to be installed on the bridge. The railings are being fabricated now and will start to be installed in March,” Mr Hadfield says.
The new balustrades are being installed on the downstream side of the bridge only.
The project is expected to be complete in March 2019.
