Manawatu Gorge reopening – traffic advisory

The NZ Transport Agency is advising that the Manawatu Gorge remains on track to be partially reopened tomorrow morning, although it is likely to be later than the initial estimate of 7am.

The new estimated timeframe is that it is expected to reopen late morning.

Regional journeys manager Delaney Myers says the adjustment of the scheduled reopening time is because work removing loose material and preparing the site for traffic is taking slightly longer than initially estimated, and crews need to put safety first.

Ms Myers thanks the public for their patience, and says the Agency will be pleased to see traffic moving through the gorge well within the initial two week timeframe.

“We’re nearly there, we just want to make sure we do the job right, and that we keep everyone safe.”

What you need to know:

• The Gorge will be opened shortly before midday (conditions permitting)
• It will close at 6pm in the evenings until otherwise advised
• On Sunday and Monday, it will open at 7am

• Leave enough time up your sleeve to use the Saddle Road, just in case we need to shut the Gorge at short notice
• Just one lane for two-way traffic will be operating past the slip.
• Traffic lights will let vehicles through, just like ‘stop-go’ signs. This will result in small delays.
• Early next week we’ll assess whether we can open it up 24-7.
