Contractors will begin works to repair a slip on State Highway 35 between Makorori Headland and Makorori surfer’s carpark on Monday 12 August.
The slip, which is behind the guardrail on the beach side of the road, is a result of the 2018 Queen’s Birthday weekend flood event.
The $202,000 repair project is part of NZ Transport Agency’s Emergency Works.
The works include installing a culvert across the highway and putting erosion control measures in place, and are expected to take up to five weeks to complete.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Oliver Postings says impacts to traffic will be minimal as most of the work will be undertaken in the shoulder.
“However, there will be a 30 kilometre speed restriction in place when contractors are on site, and towards the end of the project we will need to close the highway to one lane.
“We will keep the community updated as the project progresses.”
Contractors need to access the work site from the beach, so beach-goers should be cautious around heavy machinery operating at the high tide mark.
