Make sure you get to the game on time – FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 update

With large crowds expected in the capital for two games this week, football fans and commuters will need to be on the ball when it comes to getting around in Wellington.

The New Zealand vs Philippines and USA vs The Netherlands fixtures on Tuesday and Thursday are expected to be well attended, meaning many people will likely be travelling to and from the city on game days.

It will mean more people on the roads and using public transport, and this will coincide with peak commute times.

Tuesday’s game is in the evening with supporters arriving at the stadium between 4:00 and 5:30 pm.

Thursday’s game is in the afternoon with supporter leaving the stadium between 3:00 and 5:00 pm.

Fans and commuters are urged to note these times and make sure they have plenty of time to get to their destinations. Supporters heading to and from games at the stadium are also eligible for free public transport when presenting match tickets.

Important information for commuters and fans:

  • Expect there to be fewer carparks available in the city on game days.
  • Commuter rail capacity is being increased on match days and bus capacity is also being increased with Metlink using larger buses on routes near Wellington Stadium.

  • Planned maintenance on rail lines has been deferred to avoid match days. This means trains will follow normal schedules with no services replaced by buses.
