An overnight fatal crash means State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive is currently closed in both directions between Salisbury Rd and Quarantine Rd.
Update 1.05pm:
All lanes on State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive are now open.
Drivers can still expect delays as congestion and queued traffic clears.
Update Midday:
Police have finished their scene investigations. Contractors are now working hard to reopen State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive to all traffic.
The road remains closed at this time but is hoped to be reopened within the next few hours.
Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers for their patience and cooperation and to continue using detour routes.
Update 10.15am:
State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive, remains closed this morning.
It will remain closed while Police continue their investigation. At this stage there is no estimated time for the road to be reopened.
The incident was reported around 1.30 am.
While there are local detours available, road users are warned there will be significant delays travelling between Stoke and Nelson this morning with significant congestion likely on local roads. Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
The closure will remain while the Police Serious Crash Unit investigates.
Northbound traffic can detour via Salisbury Rd Ext, Main Rd, Annesbrook Dr and back onto State Highway 6. The reverse applies for southbound drivers.
