Motorists travelling on State Highway 5 (SH5), State Highway 36 (SH36), and State Highway 30A (SH30A) Rotorua this week are advised to expect delays and consider using an alternative route.
The NZ Transport Agency says thousands of people are expected to attend Crankworxs, an international mountain bike event held at Skyline Rotorua on SH5 and increased traffic is expected to cause major delays.
The festival runs from Wednesday March 25 to Sunday March 29, with the events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday expected to attract the most people.
People not attending the event are advised to consider an alternative route via SH33/ SH30 and Te Ngae Road (east of the lake) and avoid the area if possible.
Traffic is expected to peak on SH5 and SH36 between the hours of 5pm and 7pm on Wednesday March 25, Thursday March 26 and Friday March 27, as people leave Skyline Rotorua each day.
On Thursday March 26, traffic is also expected to peak just after 2pm.
Traffic is expected to be heaviest on Friday March 27, between the hours of 5pm and 6pm.
During the weekend traffic is expected to be heaviest between the hours of 12pm and 5pm each day.
