Maintenance work planned for SH3 Awakino Gorge

|

A fortnight of maintenance work is scheduled for State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge in December.

During the work, between Monday 2 December and Friday 13 December, crews will focus on patch repairs and slip clearance work, as well as guardrail and signage repair.

The work will be carried out under a mix of stop/go traffic management and 3 days of closure.

The stretch of road will be closed from Tuesday 3 December to Thursday 5 December between 9.30am and 2.30pm each day.

The road closure is needed due to the narrow and winding nature of the Awakino Gorge.

Outside the road closures, stop/go traffic management will be in place 7am to 7pm, from Monday 2 December to Friday 13 December. At all other times, the road will be open.

During the stop/go traffic management outside of the closure times, road users can expect delays of approximately 20-30 minutes.

System Manager for Manawatū-Whanganui and Taranaki, Liesl Dawson, says all road users are strongly advised to plan their journeys during the stop/go traffic management and expect delays.

“We appreciate people’s understanding during this fortnight of work, which is focussed on making the Awakino Gorge as resilient as possible. Please plan ahead and, if possible, avoid travelling in this area of the network during this time,” says Ms Dawson.
