15 April 2024:

Three partial days of closures are planned for a stretch of State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge from late this month while road maintenance is carried out.

The road will be closed from Tuesday 30 April to Thursday 2 May, each day between 10am and 2pm.

Outside the road closures, stop/go traffic controls will be in place 6am to 6pm, from Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May. At all other times, the road will be open.

The road closure is needed due to the narrow and winding nature of the Awakino Gorge.

Crews will be working during the week replacing culverts, clearing slips, installing guardrail and repairing signage and other maintenance.

System Manager for Manawatū-Whanganui and Taranaki, Liesl Dawson, says the closures have been purposely timed to avoid the current Mount Messenger maintenance works to minimise disruption for road users and communities in the area.

While the stop/go traffic controls are in place, please allow for approximately 15-20 minutes of delays.

During the closures, access to property within the site may be limited, but residents must speak with one of our onsite crew for assistance travelling to and from their properties from home.

“We appreciate people’s understanding during this week of work, which is focussed on making the Awakino Gorge as resilient as possible. Please plan ahead and, if possible, avoid travelling in this area of the network during this time,” says Ms Dawson.

The work is weather dependent so may be postponed to the week beginning 6 May – please visit our Journey Planner for updated information.
