Final resurfacing works on the Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway are expected to be complete by the end of summer, meaning motorists will soon be able to experience a smooth and improved surface over the entire length of the expressway.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says with the weather improving, crews are preparing to restart from the week of Monday 7 September. Works remain weather dependent.
“We need warm, dry weather to successfully complete resurfacing work and to make sure the new surface is performing well,” Senior Manager Project Delivery Andy Thackwray says.
“With warmer temperatures on the way, we will soon resume resurfacing the last remaining section of road. We know this work has been disruptive, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of the public.”
The works are a continuation of the M2PP Expressway resurfacing works from earlier in the year, which were paused due to the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown, and then over the winter months when ground conditions were too cold.
The resurfacing work involves removing some of the existing surface layer, applying a new waterproof layer and placing a new Open Graded Porous Asphalt (OGPA) layer on top. OGPA provides a smoother surface for drivers, requires less maintenance and is quieter for motorists and nearby residents.
Since 2018, around 23 lane kilometres of the M2PP Expressway have been resurfaced, with approximately nine lane kilometres remaining.
Resurfacing works will be carried out from 7am-7pm. While the works are underway, one lane will be closed within the worksite area and the speed limit will be 30km/h. During the evening, and when worksites are unattended, the speed limit will be 70km/h.
“We thank motorists for driving safely through worksites. When drivers follow the posted speed limits it helps keep them, our workers, and all other road users safe,” Mr Thackwray says.
Works will not take place in the lead up to or during public holidays or long weekends. They are expected to be completed by the end of summer.
