Important information for drivers.
Lower North Island
- Night-time urban motorway closures on State Highway 1 between the Terrace Tunnel and the Aotea Quay continue. One more week of night closures are planned for essential maintenance and resurfacing works. With wet weather forecast for next week, there is a chance of changes being made to work schedules. Drivers heading in and out of Wellington’s CBD on the urban motorway should check road conditions before travelling and expect delays.
- Drivers heading up the Kāpiti Coast on Saturday need to be aware of the XTERRA Wellington Festival being held at QE2 Park near Paekākāriki. Trail runners and triathletes will be competing. Stop/Go traffic management will be in place between 4 am and 10 pm at Mackays Crossing, near the SH59/Transmission Gully interchange.
Top of the South Island
- For those cycling the Great Taste Trail in Tasman – because of increasing fire risk, two sections of the trail - Wai-iti Reserve to Quail Valley Road and Belgrove to Kohatu (Flat Rock Café) – are closed from 23 February. It means there may be more cyclists on State Highway 6. Drivers must look out for them and share the road with care.
- Maintenance works continue on State Highway 1 near Seddon. This work is ongoing over the next three weeks
- There is good news for regular users of State Highway 6 between Nelson and Blenheim. Resurfacing and maintenance work on the Whangamoa Hill has been finished ahead of schedule and night closures originally scheduled for next week are no longer needed. The route will be open 24/7.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 17 February). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
