Planned state highway roadworks over the coming week.
Important information for drivers
North Island
- Rock clearing night works are ongoing on State Highway 2, Horokiwi, and the top end of State Highway 1, Ngauranga Gorge. Lane and directional closures will be in place.
- New infrastructure improvements are being added to State Highway 1 and State Highway 59 between Tawa and Porirua. Night-time lane closures to allow this work begins this Sunday.
- Wairarapa traffic heading south between Masterton and Carterton on State Highway 2 will have to detour via local roads on Sunday and Monday nights. This is to allow the installation of new median barriers to be completed. The detour will be in place between 9 pm and 4 am on both nights. Southbound traffic will have to detour via Cornwall Road and Hughes Line.
South Island
- Drivers travelling on State Highway 60 over the Tākaka Hill to Golden Bay need to be ready for bad weather. The Metservice has issued a heavy rain and a strong wind watch for the area from Saturday afternoon through to Saturday night. Road users must drive to the conditions and be prepared for hazards, like treefalls, slips, rockfalls, and localised flooding. Drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists will need to take care in wind-exposed areas. It is also important to check road and weather conditions before travelling.
- Slip repairs continue on State Highway 6, Whangamoa. Stop/Go traffic management will be in place 7 am to 5 pm daily. Drivers must follow temporary speed restrictions and can expect short travel delays of up to 10 minutes.
- There will be night works on State Highway 1, Weld Pass, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Drivers can expect short delays as stop/go traffic controls will be in place.
- Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. A closure is in place until approximately March 2025, while a new overbridge and other infrastructure is built. More details can be found on the Marlborough District Council website.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 19 August). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
