Important information for drivers
Matariki and end of the school holidays:
- The Matariki Holiday on Friday and the end of school holidays will mean there will be more traffic than usual on the roads this weekend. Drivers should expect journey times to be longer and for there to be congestion at the usual locations – State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill, and State Highway 1, Otāki to Levin – as people head away on Friday and return home on Sunday. Details on holiday road conditions and peak travel times can be found on our website:
- If you are road-tripping, pay attention to your driving as distracted driving is a serious road safety issue. Taking your attention away from your driving, even for just a few seconds, significantly increases the risk of a crash. Turn your cellphone off, because sending or receiving text messages or calls on hand-held mobile phones while driving is illegal.
- There are some handy tips on our website about how you can keep yourself safe:
North Island:
- If you are extending your holiday weekend and are travelling through the central North Island on Monday, 17 July, be aware that there will be a closure on the Desert Road (State Highway 1) between 7 am and 3 pm for the recovery of a truck. Detours are available, but mean longer travel times
- Median barrier installation work resumes from Monday, 17 July, on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton. These are night works – 7 pm to 6 am – and stop/go traffic controls will be in place
South Island:
- Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. Lane restrictions are in place this month for pipe relocation work. Dublin Street will be closed from August for approximately 20 months while a new overbridge is built.
- The Tasman District Council will be carrying out wastewater works during the day on State Highway 60, Motueka, from 10 July to 27 July between the Motueka River Bridge and Parker Street. Stop/Go traffic management and a 30 km/h speed limit will be in place. Drivers can expect 5–10-minute travel delays from these works.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 15 July). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
