The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (4 June 2023).
Holiday weekend information for drivers
For King’s Birthday weekend, travellers need to be ready for the usual peak traffic times. Traffic volumes will be heavier on Friday afternoon and again on Monday when people return home. Plan your journey to avoid congestion if you can.
We put our road works on hold for the holiday to make your travel easier. However, project site traffic management remains in place, and our crews are on standby for emergencies.
Use our holiday journey planner to check road conditions and travel times. It has all the details on times and places where holiday congestion is expected.

Road safety is also essential. With some rain forecast over the holiday weekend, it is important people drive to the conditions and watch their speed and following distances. It never hurts to check the weather conditions before you travel too.

If there are traffic queues and congestion, please be patient and make sure you pass other vehicles safely. We want people to get to and from their destinations without incident.
