Important information for drivers
While our summer maintenance programme is over, it doesn’t mean our contractors and road crews are getting a winter break. Their work goes on, ensuring highways remain open and safe to use.
Your help is important. If you see a hazard on the highway, or a pothole that needs fixing, please let us know:
Our winter maintenance crews constantly update highway conditions as closures occur and conditions change. They have the most up-to-date information and experienced knowledge of their region, so please follow their instructions and advice at all times.
North Island
- A key safety feature will be opening soon for the State Highway 2, Masterton to Carterton, safety improvement project.
- Planned reconstruction work for State Highway 2, Chapel St, Masterton has been deferred and won’t be proceeding this weekend as originally planned.
- State Highway 58 between Transmission Gully and the Pāuatahanui roundabout will be closed the first weekend of July for road reconstruction.
South Island
- The Metservice has weekend weather warning in place for southern Marlborough and Tākaka/Golden Bay
- Maintenance and upgrade works continue until July on State Highway 6, Hira – Rai Saddle.
- There will be weekday (Mon-Fri) stop/go traffic controls in place between 7am and 5:30pm on State Highway 1, Weld Pass, for 10 days from 28 June. This is for channel and drainage works. It requires the road to be restricted to one lane under a 30 km/h speed limit to allow contractors to carry out the work safely. Drivers can expect five-to-ten-minute delays while this work is underway and should factor it into their travel plans.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week. Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
