Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

|

Important information for drivers.

This is the last planned roadworks update for 2023. Regular updates will resume in the New Year after the holiday break.

There will be a moratorium on roadworks on the state highway network from midday, Friday, 22 December, until midnight Sunday, 7 January. This is to ensure delays and disruptions on state highways are minimised as much as possible over the holiday period. However, contractors will be on-call to attend emergency maintenance and safety works as required.

Please be aware that traffic management and speed limits may be in place at project and work sites. It is essential drivers obey all traffic management controls and temporary speed limits. Even if no crews are on-site, traffic controls are there for driver safety and to prevent damage to vehicles and road surfaces.

Holiday driving

NZTA/Waka Kotahi has updated its popular online holiday journeys traffic prediction tool. It shows predicted traffic flows over the Christmas and New Year holidays based on past travel patterns.

This handy ‘trip hack’ is a great way to plan your trips and avoid delays. If you’re travelling over the holidays, make sure you use it so you can avoid peak traffic periods. Local information can be found at the links below:

Weather Warning

The Metservice has a heavy rain watch in place for Tasman west of Tākaka from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening. Heavy rain is forecast and may affect those travelling on State Highway 60 in Golden Bay.

Drivers should check road and weather conditions before they travel as bad weather can see roads closed at short notice. It is also essential people drive to the conditions and be prepared for hazards such as slips and localised flooding.

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 9 December). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
