Important information for drivers
Winter driving and sunstrike
Winter brings shorter days and sunstrike is more likely because the sun is lower in the sky. This can make it difficult, or even impossible, to see and is a very dangerous condition to drive in. It is important drivers take extra care, particularly when driving at sunrise or sunset, and especially when turning or driving towards the sun. Further tips and advice can be found on our website:
North Island
- A key safety feature will be opening soon for the State Highway 2, Masterton to Carterton, safety improvement project.
- Planned reconstruction work for State Highway 2, Chapel St, Masterton has been postponed due and won’t be happening this weekend as originally planned. It will now begin on Friday, 23 June.
South Island
- State Highway 65, Shenandoah, will have night closures from 18-22 June as contractors carry out resurfacing work and asphalting on this route
- Maintenance and upgrade works continue until July on State Highway 6, Hira – Rai Saddle.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (11 June 2023). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
