Important information for drivers.
Easter holiday weekend
- With Easter being a holiday weekend, drivers must take extra care on the roads. Wet weather is forecast for the lower North Island. It means motorists must drive to the conditions and be ready for wet and slippery roads. Drivers are encouraged to use our holiday journey planner to avoid peak congestion. Plan your travel to avoid highway queues.
Lower North Island
- State Highway 2, Chapel Street, in Masterton is due to undergo significant roadworks next month.
- Looking ahead, the next round of State Highway tunnel maintenance will be underway in Wellington from 8-10 April. There will be night closures of the Mount Victoria, Arras, and Terrace Tunnels while this work is underway. Drivers travelling through the Wellington CBD on these nights will have to use local road detours.
Top of the South Island
- Stage 3 works are about to get underway in Renwick for an ongoing roundabout project.
- Traffic congestion is expected on State Highway 60 near Mapua on Easter Sunday while the Mapua Easter Fair is held at the Mapua Domain. Drivers can expect extra traffic in the area and potential travel delays between 8 am and 5 pm.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 30 March). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
