The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 7 October). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Wellington, south of Mt Victoria Tunnel, ROAD CLOSED

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Ruahine Street CLOSED for road reconstruction

  • Wednesday and Thursday nights, 7pm-5.30am
  • Stop/go traffic control for various works

State Highway 1

SH1 Grassmere

  • Monday to Thursday, 7.30 am – 4 pm
  • Preseal works
  • Stop/Go traffic management

SH1 Blenheim, Main Street between McDonalds & Burger King - Nightworks

  • Sunday to Tuesday, 6 pm – 7 am
  • Carriageway resurfacing
  • Stop/Go & detour traffic management
  • Advisory Note for northbound Over Dimensioned and Overweight Vehicles:
    • Northbound Traffic turn left off SH1 into Stuart St, then turn right into Kinross St and then right into Redwood St. This will take you back to State Highway 1.
    • South Bound traffic - a one-way lane will be provided on SH1.
  • Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. A closure is in place until approximately March 2025, while a new overbridge and other infrastructure is built. More details can be found on the Marlborough District Council website.

State Highway 6

SH6 Nelson St, Blenheim (MDC project)(external link)

  • Marlborough District Council contractors will be carrying out resurfacing work on SH6 Nelson St following watermain works

State Highway 6

SH6 Foxhill, Wakefield to Belgrove(external link)

  • Monday, 9 October to Friday, 15 December. 7 am – 6 pm (Mon-Fri)
  • Possibility of Saturday works at times as may be required
  • Temporary Speed Limit of 30km/h. Road users can expect travel delays of around 15 minutes.
  • Road reconstruction work
  • During nights and weekends when no work is taking place, a 50km/h speed restriction will be in place

SH6 Whangamoa Hill, east of Wakapuaka Bridge

  • Daily, 24/7
  • Single lane closure with stop/go and 30 km/h traffic management,
  • A shoulder closure will be in place at night.
  • Slip repair works
  • Expect short travel delays.

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • 30 km/h speed restrictions.  Road is open to two lanes
  • Rockfall area

State Highway 65

  • No major works planned

State Highway 60

SH60 Appleby to Motueka, directional closure(external link)

  • Monday, 9 October to Friday, 20 October. 6 am – 6 pm
  • Westbound lane closure - between Moutere Highway turnoff and Quayle Street. Local road detour via the Moutere Highway. SH60 remains open for Eastbound travel.
  • Resurfacing works
  • Detour expected to add 10-15 minutes to travel times

SH60 Takaka, Waitapu Rd to Commercial St(external link)

  • Monday, 2 October to Friday, 20 October. 7 am – 6 pm
  • Stop/go traffic management with 30km/h temporary speed restrictions
  • Pavement repairs

SH60 Motueka, Lyndhurst Drive to Parker St

  • Stop/Go traffic management, local road detours and temporary speed restrictions
  • Wastewater works – Tasman District Council project
  • Short traffic delays expected

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.
  • Road underslip work.
