Rock stabilisation work at the Nevis Bluff on State Highway 6, about midway between Cromwell and Queenstown has been successfully completed.
Daily ongoing traffic delays to motorists are expected to finish today.
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) says this has been another complex and challenging project to remove and stabilise 1,500 cubic metres of highly fractured rock 70m directly above the highway. The work costing an estimated $500,000 started two months ago.
Project Manager John Jarvis says despite the difficult nature of this project, everything has gone extremely well thanks to the contractor, who has worked hard to keep the traffic delays down to 20 minutes, except for blasting operations. Their good work has been recognized with positive feedback from road users about the management of traffic delays.
The 1 hour blast road closures were used to hand out road safety information packs to road user in a joint initiative involving the Central Otago & Queenstown Lakes Road Safety Partners.
NZTA would like to thank the public for their patience over this period to enable us to undertake this essential safety work.
Regular ongoing monitoring of the whole Bluff area will continue with monthly helicopter inspections.
