Tairāwhiti Roads is advising motorists that Gladstone Road Bridge will be reduced to one lane with stop/go controllers tomorrow, 5 December, between 7am and 1pm.
“This is the last lane closure for the year, so we want to thank locals for their patience as this project progresses,” Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield says.
“We know the lane closure causes delays on Wainui Road, Childers Road and Customhouse Street, so please factor in extra time for your journey tomorrow.”
The contractors will need to close one lane up to three more times between New Year and the end of the project to safely complete construction.
Mr Hadfield also advises that the see-through rails for the central spans of the bridge are still in the process of gaining a variation to resource consent.
“People may have seen the balustrade replicas going up on the end spans of the bridge,” Mr Hadfield says.
“The end span balustrade replicas form a transition to the approach balustrades.”
Tomorrow the contractors will be installing the final precast concrete deck units of the bridge at the city end.
The bridge is being widened by three meters to create a shared walking and cycling path, as part of Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme aimed at getting more people on their bikes.
The project is scheduled for completion in March 2019.
