As the upgrade of the State Highway 1/ Selwyn Avenue intersection in Whāngārei nears completion, the NZ Transport Agency is advising drivers to plan ahead as the final programme of work intensifies.
Contractors will start five weeks of concentrated works at the key intersection from this Sunday 9 November. All planned work is weather dependent.
“We’re excited to complete another of the improvement projects in Whāngārei – it means we’re delivering on what we’ve promised and providing the community with safer and easier access through the city,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon.
The final phase of work is split into three stages:-
The Transport Agency, along with Whāngārei District Council (WDC), is also planning an open day in December for the community to keep people informed about the remaining SH1 improvements at Tarewa Road, Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue, and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street.
“The support for our projects, and our contractors, we have received from the people of Whāngārei is great, and it is important to us to continue to deliver the remaining works efficiently and successfully,” Mr Gliddon says.
In all, the five projects (Tarewa Road intersection, SH1/14 intersection, Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue intersection, Selwyn Avenue to Fourth Avenue intersection and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street) will help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whāngārei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
