Rockfall protection work is due to begin on State Highway 2 north of the Horokiwi intersection this weekend.
Mark Owen, Regional Manager, Lower North Island/Top of the South, says contractors will be beginning safety work to reduce the risk of rockfalls from the hillside onto the state highway.
“Rockfalls pose a serious safety risk to road users, and we must do everything we can to reduce this danger.”
“This work will mean the left-hand northbound lane of the highway will have to be closed while works are underway, and a lower speed limit in place to keep road users safe. We will have procedures to escort cyclists through the works area too,” Mr Owen says.

Mr Owen says the scheduled FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ game between Sweden and Italy on Saturday night has been planned for.
“The affected lane will reopen to traffic by the time game ends. It means people leaving the city shouldn’t see any travel delays.”
Mr Owen says further night works on this project are planned from Sunday 13 August, with contractors to work five nights a week (Sunday–Thursday) between 7pm and 5.30am until 24 September.
“We appreciate this will create travel delays, and it’s important road users plan for them. However, these are essential safety works which must be carried out. Please bear with our contractors – they will be working hard to complete these works as quickly as possible.”
