The Karangahake Gorge on State Highway 2, between Paeroa and Waihi, will be closed on Tuesday 23 September from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm.
The closure will allow the recently repaired Queenshead rail bridge in Waikino to be reinstated over the highway. The rail bridge was damaged by an over-height vehicle in late July and had to be removed for repair.
A clearly signposted detour will be available during the closure for light vehicles only. All other vehicles will need to use SH26, SH27 and SH29 for southbound travel and SH25 and SH25A for northbound travel.
NZTA Acting Regional Operations Manager, Alan Burkett, says the available detour is not suitable for heavy truck and trailer units and suggests that, if possible, heavy vehicle operators should alter their travel times to avoid having to take a longer route.
This work is weather dependant and may be delayed if the weather is wet.
