State Highway 1 will reopen south of Kaikoura tomorrow morning at 7 am (Thursday, 16 March) after being closed since the weekend between Peketa/ the Kahutara River and Goose Bay due to fresh slips triggered by rainfall.
NZ Transport Agency Regional Performance Manager Pete Connors says crews have worked hard sluicing several sites from helicopters, followed up with scaling from the abseiling team. The road is subject to close at short notice in response to continuing seismic activity and rain which triggers rockfalls.
SH 1 south of Kaikoura is opening an hour later than the previous daytime hours – from 7 am to 8 pm daily, given the early morning darkness. (Please see last Friday’s earlier release(external link) for further details around the reduction in daytime hours of opening.)
